direct replacement for manganese greensand with a number of advantages
Inversand's Greensand Plus™ is modern version of manganese greensand where a manganese dioxide coating is applied to silica sand. It is effective at higher operating temperatures and over higher pressure differentials than traditional manganese greensand. This allows for longer run times between backwashes.
In recent years, modern media choices like Filox, Katalox Light®, and Birm® have surpassed manganese greensand in popularity. This is largely due to the fact that manganese greensand requires periodic or continuous regeneration with potassium permanganate ("Pot-Perm"), whereas these modern media do not. Like manganese greensand, it is recommended that Greensand Plus™ be either intermittently or continuously (recommended) regenerated. However, regeneration is generally done with chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) instead of potassium permanganate. See the manufacturer's specification sheet below for details.
Since Filox and Katalox Light® have become available to us, we have found little or no need to continue using manganese greensand or Greensand Plus™ in new systems as these alternative medias do not require chemical regeneration and are capable of treating similar or even higher levels of iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) as manganese greensand. However, we do find that many customers with existing manganese greensand systems would prefer to re-bed their existing systems with manganese greensand or Greensand Plus™ than switch to an alternative media.
