Description & Benefits
ClearPlus™ Series granular activated carbon (GAC) filters are an economical and highly effective choice for the removal of general dirt and sediment, chlorine, disinfection by-products including trihalomethanes (THMs), bad tastes and odors, a wide range of organic contaminants, and more.
ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filters deliver refreshing clean water to every faucet in your home. They also protect your skin and hair from the damaging effects of chlorine.
While ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filters are most often used to treat city water, they can also be used to treat well water, rainwater, and surface water (lakes, streams, and rivers) that are microbiologically safe. They are a great solution for general taste and odor problems. A UV sterilizer should be installed after the ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filter if it is used on a water source with uncertain microbiological quality. We do not recommend this product for the removal of hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg) odor as there are more effective solutions available for this particular problem - see hydrogen sulfide solutions here.
We use only the very best brand-name, NSF/ANSI Standard 61 validated, coconut shell derived carbon - Calgon® OLC 12x40. It is made in the USA! Ask our competitors where they get their carbon...

ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filter systems are designed to backwash periodically to eject trapped sediment and particulates and to prevent channeling that could reduce system performance. Accordingly, the control valve is connected to a drain and the backwash water together with the rejected contaminants are simply discharged to the drain during the backwash process. The backwash process is usually done once per week and is controlled by the Fleck 5800 SXT digital control valve. The process is generally programmed to occur in the middle of the night (fully adjustable) when you are not likely to be using any water. In a typical residential application, the carbon media should be replaced approximately every 5 years to maintain optimal performance.
How ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filters Work
The heart of all of our ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filter systems is their granular activated carbon media. Carbon is a substance that has a long history of being used to absorb impurities and is perhaps the most powerful absorbent known to man. One pound of carbon contains a surface area of roughly 125 acres and can absorb literally thousands of different chemicals. However, as you might expect, not all activated carbon is created equally, nor are all carbons equally effective in removing contaminants from water. Their effectiveness is determined by the size of the carbon granules, the source of the carbon, its purity, the process by which it was made, and of course, how it is applied.
We use only the very best brand-name, NSF/ANSI Standard 61 validated, virgin coconut shell derived carbon - Calgon® OLC 12x40. It is made in the USA! Ask our competitors where they get their carbon...
Calgon®'s OLC 12x40 granular activated carbon (GAC) is a coconut shell derived carbon for the removal of dissolved organic contaminants from domestic water, wastewater and process liquids. These contaminants include taste and odor compounds, chlorine, organic color, total organic carbon (TOC) and industrial chemicals such as chlorinated solvents (TCE, PCE). The pore structure enables it to be used for adsorption of both high and low molecule weight impurities from waters and liquids. The carbon is especially effective for adsorbing trace organic compounds such as vinyl chloride, methylene chloride, MTBE and THM's/disinfection by-products.
The removal of contaminants by granular activated carbon occurs as a result of:
Catalytic Reduction - Upon contact with activated carbon, chlorine is catalytically reduced to harmless chloride ions. This process is very rapid and does not use up the capacity of the carbon to remove other contaminants, thereby allowing for a very long filter life.
Adsorption - Organic contaminants that cause bad taste and odors, and most chemical contaminants are adsorbed onto the media surface as a result of an electro-chemical attraction. As noted above, activated carbon has a massive surface area available for adsorption.
Mechanical Filtration - where particulates, dirt, and sediment get physically removed from the water since they can't fit through the spaces between the granules. Filtration down to a level of about 30-50 microns is generally possible.
The water flow path through our ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filter systems is downflow. This provides optimal filtration. ClearPlus systems are designed to backwash periodically to eject trapped sediment and particulates so there are no filters to replace. This process also prevents channeling within the media bed that could reduce system performance over time. The backwash function is completely automated and controlled by the Fleck 5800 control valve - the "brains" of the system. The control valve is connected to a drain and the backwash water together with the rejected sediments are simply discharged to the drain during the backwash process. The backwash is generally programmed to occur in the middle of the night (fully adjustable) when you are not likely to be using any water.
The carbon media has a long service life, generally about 5 years. It can be replaced in about half an hour without any plumbing knowledge or special experience - anyone can do it. There is no need to replace filter cartridges every few months, saving you time and money!

Installation / Manuals
We have designed our ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filter systems for ease of installation. We provide a bypass valve with each system. The bypass valve has male 1" NPT threaded fittings. If your pipe diameter is different, you can connect to the bypass with simple adapters available at any hardware store. The drain line connection is female 1/2" NPT.
The ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filter system is generally installed after the pressure tank or pressure booster if applicable.
We recommend that ClearPlus™ Series Carbon Filter systems be installed by a licensed plumber, however, your warranty is valid as long as your system is installed in accordance with local plumbing codes and the Owner's Manual.
